Is there anything that says seaside more than a bag of fish and chips? Whether you prefer a sausage, mushy peas or curry sauce, wrapped, open or on a plate; there are so many ways to enjoy them in Cleethorpes; whether you’re walking along the prom, sitting in your car, soaking up the indoor atmosphere or enjoying them in the comfort of your own home.
A day barely goes by when there isn’t an argument conversation about what the best chippy is in Cleethorpes, and I know people are going to disagree, however here are my personal favourites for different scenarios:
Top 5 Places for Fish & Chips in Cleethorpes
Best To Takeaway: Ocean Fish Bar
Before she passed away in late 2020, my Nana loved going to Ocean Fish Bar just for a piece of fish. She didn’t want chips, she literally just wanted the fish. Although I’m not a huge fan of fish myself (more of a sausage and chips gal), it is still my go-to chippy in Cleethorpes if I plan to takeaway.
Sometimes we’ll take them home and sometimes we’ll park up on the seafront and eat them. One thing that never changes though, is that we will always eat them in the wrapping. Is it just me, or do chips just taste so much better when eaten straight out of the wrapping?
Best Traditional Sit Down: Steels Corner House
I have a confession, I didn’t grow up going to Steels. In fact, the first time I ever ate at Steels was in 2022. There’s no real reason why I’d never been, but I spent years with people telling me how amazing it was and how I needed to try it, but I just never got chance to, for one reason or another.
I’ve now been three times over the past couple of years and the thing about Steels that really strikes me, is how lovingly they stick to the British traditions that includes a slice of bread and butter with your fish and chips, and a nice pot of tea.
It could feel old-fashioned – and in a sense, it absolutely is – but that is why it’s so special. Sometimes old-fashioned and traditional is what you’re looking for, and for me Steels takes me back to going to a chippy off Freeman Street with my Nana on a Saturday lunchtime.
It’s a classic case of “why fix what ain’t broke”, and I think if Steel’s were to ever change, it would lose 90% of what makes it such a lovely place to go.
Best for Walking Along The Prom: Browns
If you find yourself at the beach with your family and prefer to stay away from the bustling centre of Cleethorpes, Browns is the ideal spot for fish and chips.
Browns is located conveniently along the promenade, Browns offers a perfect blend of quality food and scenic views. The fish is always fresh, the chips are crispy, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll or enjoying a day out with your family, Browns has the option to take your chips along the prom with you, or eat inside, whilst still enjoying the sounds of the sea.
Best for Large Groups: Papas
When it comes to accommodating large groups in Cleethorpes, Papas is a top choice for enjoying fish and chips. While Papas might not be everyone’s cup of tea – and that’s okay – I’ve been to Papas a couple of times for such events, and each visit has been great.
The spacious seating and lively atmosphere make it perfect for bringing together friends and family. The menu offers a variety of options, ensuring that even the pickiest eaters will find something to enjoy, which is definitely good when you’re with a bigger group.
The generous portions and classic seaside options make Papas an excellent choice for those looking to share a meal on one of Cleethorpes’ most iconic
Best a Little Further Out: Sea Lane Fisheries
If you want to avoid the popular areas of Cleethorpes, but still fancy some tasty fish and chips, I highly recommend Sea Lane Fisheries.
Located close to Beachcomber/Thorpe Park/The Fitties, Sea Lane Fisheries is perfect for holidaymakers and locals heading home alike. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that the slightly out of town centre location means that it will be quiet. This is – quite rightly – a very popular chip shop. Parking isn’t the best either, which can be a bit of a pain in the bum but personally I think it’s worth it.
